Caerphilly County Borough Council has not ruled out future compulsory redundancies and pay freezes in a bid to cut the workforce budget.
The local authority’s cabinet approved proposals to introduce a voluntary retirement scheme, flexible retirement scheme, voluntary severance scheme and a review of the council’s redundancy scheme.
There are also plans to outsource council services to third party providers, putting the council at odds with the trade unions.
Councillors voted not to introduce a default retirement age, nor review the cost of sickness benefits.
Pay freezes and reductions in pay and working hours will not be implemented at this time but could be considered in the future.
Compulsory redundancies will be avoided “wherever possible”, according to a council spokesman, despite promises of no redundancies when the budget was announced.
Cllr Christine Forehead, Cabinet Member for HR & Governance, said: “Like councils across Wales, Caerphilly County Borough Council is faced with significant budgetary challenges going forward, however officers and members continue to work together to ensure a balanced budget, while working to minimise the impact on residents and council staff alike.”
