Get active with Nordic walking

Residents across Caerphilly County Borough are being encouraged to get outdoors and improve their fitness through a series of Nordic walking sessions.

Run by instructor Ed Woolley, the sessions take place weekly at locations across the borough.
Ed has more than 15 years’ experience in the discipline, having trained with British Nordic Walking in 2010.

Nordic walking uses specially designed poles to enhance natural walking movement, with an action similar to cross-country skiing. The activity is designed to improve fitness while remaining accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

Alternating walks from Abertridwr, Graig y Rhacca and Bedwas take place on Saturdays from 10.45am.

Tuesday sessions, starting at 11am, rotate between Cwmgelli, Pengam, Wyllie, Pontywaun and Wattsville.

Each session includes a short warm-up and cool-down, and Nordic walking poles are provided.

Ed said the classes aim to combine exercise with the social benefits of spending time outdoors.

“Nordic walking is a great way of getting and maintaining fitness while being outdoors and enjoying like-minded conversation,” he said.

Ed said he hopes more people will join the walks as awareness grows.

Saturday sessions start at 10.45am and will meet on February 21 at the car park near Abertridwr Library; February 28 at Graig y Rhacca Estate; and March 7 at the car park near the Bridgend Inn pub in Bedwas.

Tuesday sessions start at 11am and take place on February 25 in Pontywaun (canal walk); March 4 in Wyllie; and March 11 in Cwmgelli.
