Fifteen families from Penyrheol graduated from a scheme to help children fully gain the benefits of education on June 3.

The Families and Schools Together (FAST) scheme is supported by Save the Children and helps the integration of children between three and five and their families and communities in a bid to improve childrens’ education.

Children from better off areas are twice as likely to get five good GCSEs as children from deprived areas and the scheme aims to develop youngsters early to engage them in education.

Mary Powell-Chandler, Head of Save the Children in Wales, said: “FAST brings together the key elements in determining a child’s success, their school, their family, and the community. FAST ensures that children are given the support they need to thrive.”

Pupils from Cwm Ifor Primary School received graduation certificates and made their own caps to celebrate completing the eight-week programme that encourages parents and children to complete everyday tasks, such as sharing a meal and spending one on one time with each other.

Rhian Jones took part with her six-year-old son, Jac Allan.

She said: “This has been fab, it has given me the chance to spend time with Jac, time which is harder to get at home because there are so many other things to do about the house.”
