Caerphilly Council seize feral horses

News | | Published: 12:00, Tuesday July 1st, 2014.

Caerphilly Council has seized almost 50 feral horses on Manmoel Common in a bid to re-home them.

Notices will be displayed on the land from today, July 1, announcing the seizure and notifying the owners how they can be claimed back.

The notices will be displayed for seven days after which the horses will become property of Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent County Borough Councils.

The council said they took the measures after concern over the horses’ welfare were raised by local charities they have been working with and acted under the Control of Horses Act 2014 and the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

A spokesperson on behalf of Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly County Borough Councils said: “Our utmost priority is ensuring the health and welfare of these horses and ponies, and we will work tirelessly alongside colleagues at other organisations to try and find permanent homes for as many of these animals as we possibly can.

“Re-homing avenues will be explored before any alternative options are considered.”

r.e the removal of horses and ponies from manmoel common yesterday. I have commented on the council page, regarding the removal of these ponies, i noticed instantly that mainly mares and foals were removed, why? As it is the stallions and indescriminate breeding causing the problem in the first instance. Secondly how much has it cost to do this and who is financing this move?
