A 23-year-old man has been charged with the manslaughter of Jake Sweeney, who died after being assaulted opposite the Irish Tymes pub in Caerphilly town centre.

Jason Grovell, of Gelli Deg, who was arrested on suspicion of murder on Friday August 29, was charged with manslaughter and will appear in court on September 8, a Gwent Police spokeswoman said.

Mr Sweeney, who was originally from Abertridwr, was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff following the assault in the early hours of Sunday August 24 and passed away on Thursday August 28.

Thousands of tributes were left on the Facebook page PrayforJake and his father, Mark Sweeney, also used social media to pay his respects.
