Llancaiach Fawr opens doors for public to see conservation work

Llancaiach Fawr Manor, near Nelson, is throwing its doors open to the public for free on September 21.

As part of the Open Doors scheme, supported by Cadw, visitors will have will have the chance see the progress on conservation works being funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw, and Caerphilly County Borough Council.

The works, totalling in excess of £1 million, will provide disabled access to the 16th Century Grade I listed building as well as improving the overall visitor experience.

Period lighting and furniture is also being fitted alongside a new roof and a restored servants’ quarters in the building’s attic.

The major new construction is the staircase tower which has been carefully designed to sympathetically fit with the existing structure and will contain a new oak staircase and a platform lift.

The Open Doors event will include guided tours by Diane Walker, General Manager of Llancaiach Fawr. Sophie Teague Davies of Caroe and Partners, the Conservation Architect and Mike Williams, MD of Taliesin Conservation Ltd, the contractors undertaking the building works, will both be on hand to chat about their work on the project.

There will also be a photographic record on display of the work done so far for visitors to see how the project has developed throughout the year.
