St Catherine’s Church food co-op celebrates first anniversary in Caerphilly

News | | Published: 17:00, Thursday November 13th, 2014.

A food co-op which provides affordable local fruit and vegetables in Caerphilly has celebrated its first anniversary.

An average of 130 bags of fruit and vegetables are distributed every week by the food co-op at St Catherine’s Church, Caerphilly town, which was launched last year.

The Reverend Gareth Coombes, Associate Priest in the Parish of Caerphilly said: “We have been shocked by the response of the local community since starting the co-op at St Catherine’s which has become a bustling place for people to meet, chat and have access to affordable produce. I am grateful to all those involved in the food co-op, and look forward to continuing what we set out to do as a church as we reach out in a very practical way and serve the communities of Caerphilly.”

The food co-op is run by volunteers who work with the Rural Regeneration Unit and local supplier Peter Broughton Ltd – operating from the church hall in Mill Road every Wednesday between 11am and 1pm.

A total of £15,000 worth of fruit and vegetables have been sold to a total of 2,500 customers at the Caerphilly co-op over the last 12 months.
