Caerphilly Castle walk to raise awareness of White Ribbon Campaign against domestic violence

News | | Published: 13:00, Wednesday November 19th, 2014.

Men, women and families from across Caerphilly County Borough are being encouraged to sign up to take part in a special walk being held on Sunday November 23 to raise awareness of the White Ribbon Campaign – the largest global effort to eradicate male violence against women.

Caerphilly County Borough Council, together with specialist domestic abuse services, are organising a special walk at Caerphilly Castle, starting on Crescent Road, on Sunday at 10am.

Walkers are invited to come along and take part for free in this special one-mile walk, and play a part in raising awareness of the issue of domestic abuse.

In keeping with the theme, participants are invited to take part in the walk in ladies’ footwear.

Cllr Robin Woodyatt, Cabinet Member for Social Services, said: “The statistics are shocking, in that one in four women will experience physical abuse in their lifetime, and almost one million children witness domestic abuse at home every year in the UK. Here in Caerphilly County Borough we’re committed to raising awareness of domestic abuse in all forms, and in doing so, we hope to encourage those who may be suffering in silence to have the courage to come forward and seek support.

“This awareness raising event may be light hearted in its nature, but behind it is a very serious message. I would encourage as many people as possible to get involved by taking part in this event, and by doing so they will help us raise awareness of the White Ribbon Campaign, as we seek to support those suffering from domestic abuse – both women and men – in our county borough.”

To sign up to take part in the ‘Walk a mile in her shoes’ event, please complete the entry form available at www.caerphilly.gov.uk or by calling 01443 819317.
