Two cars have crashed on the junction of Caerphilly Mountain Road and Castle View, prompting residents to repeat calls for road safety improvements.

Witnesses said the road was blocked and one of the cars was overturned in what is the second crash on the residential stretch of the road this year.

Campaigners are calling on Caerphilly County Borough Council to install a road barrier after three cars ploughed into residents’ gardens in three years.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said a black Kia and Blue Ford Focus crashed today, November 18, just after 12.30pm.

They added the two male drivers received minor neck and chest injuries and that recovery of the vehicles was being arranged.

Mother-of-four Rhiannon Williams, who has handed a petition into the council calling for a crash barrier, said she believed one of the drivers was taken to hospital.

She said: “The front of the one car that was upside down looked awful. It’s a bad one.Where it is there’s houses around.

“That’s two this year now in the same area. I’m sure Highways will make an excuse why they won’t assess the road (for a barrier), we handed in a petition and are waiting to hear when they will discuss it.”

Mrs Williams of Heol Cae Barrau added:  “The last crash was only a few months ago and Highways refused to reassess the road again because the joyriders escaped and there were no reported injuries.

“There are so many young children that play in all of the gardens on the Mountain Road. Thankfully we were lucky yet again that none of them are dead.”

Perhaps the speed limit on that road should be reduced to 30mph, as everybody who drives a car ( including those who are petitioning for a crash barrier ) breaks the speed limit, I break the speed limit every single time I take to the roads just the same as every other driver does, the only difference is that some drivers exceed the speed limit more than others but the fact is that every driver breaks the speed limit at some point in their journey, maybe only by 1 or 2 mph but nevertheless it is still breaking the speed limit. If the limit is 40 then folk will drive at 45 or 48, if it is 30 then they will drive at 32 or 35, so reducing the limit will reduce some of the speed. But speed alone is not the only cause of a road traffic accident, most drivers simply aren’t paying attention and do not look further than the end of their bonnet.

The council can’t line every single road with steel crash barriers just encase some fool goes off the road, a speed camera would be a better option.

I do not think lowering the speed limit will work. I think most people drive down the road at a speed they think is fine regardless of speed limits. I do agree with a speed camera though, set it at 45mph (seems a safe limit) it would be a cash cow.

Yes – the council should definitely place traffic calming measures on this stretch of road given the way that some idiots drive down there. Will they wait for a fatality first I wonder? I considered buying a house backing on to this stretch a few years ago, but once I saw the road behind it I decided against it.

Deciding against buying a house there is the sensible thing to do. I have no sympathy for people who bought a house there in the first place. The road was there first, what did they expect? The same goes for people who buy houses on flood plains, by busy airports or by railway lines.

Yes very true, don’t buy a house next to a pig farm and then complain about the smell. Sadly road traffic accidents are a fact of life, we all take our lives in our hands when we climb into a car, most accidents are caused by the driver doing something stupid and are completely avoidable if only drivers paid more attention to what they are doing. CrashMap.co.uk shows many accidents in and around Caerphilly, the council can’t stop it happening, they are random events that could happen anywhere at anytime, they can’t stop idiots from driving recklessly, why not put a speed camera van there for a few days – if drivers know that it’s a location where a camera van could be they would be a bit more attentive and cautious when using that stretch of road.
