CaerphillyCounty Borough residents fined £1,000 for dropping cigarettes

News | | Published: 16:04, Thursday December 4th, 2014.

In five days over £1,000 of fines were issued across Caerphilly County Borough in a crackdown on dropping cigarette butts.

Fourteen Fixed Penalty Notices of £75 were issued in Caerphilly, Blackwood, Bargoed and Gelligaer, totalling £1050, by enforcement officers for Caerphilly County Borough Council in a bid to stop environmental crime.

Cllr David Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services said: “Cigarette butts may be small but they have the potential to cause significant litter problems across our county borough.

“While it is only a very small minority of people who dispose of cigarette butts incorrectly, nonetheless it is a very serious issue and one which we are committed to tackling.

“There are plenty of litter bins located throughout our county borough, and residents can also submit requests for additional litter bins where they feel more are needed – so there really is no excuse for littering of any kind.”

A Caerphilly County Borough Council spokesperson said: “Where non-payment of a £75 Fixed Penalty Notice for an environmental offence occurs, Caerphilly County Borough Council will pursue the matter through the courts without exception.

“To report offenders of littering or any other environmental offence, please call Caerphilly StreetPride on 01443 866566 or visit www.caerphilly.gov.uk/streetpride”
