Bargoed rounded off the festive period with another bonus point win, away at third placed Merthyr, delivered gift-wrapped by a dominant forward pack and solid midfield defence.
The 31-0 win on December 27 means the Blues remain 14 points ahead of second-placed Swansea with their remarkable run of 13 wins from 13 in the SWALEC Championship this season.
A close first-half saw only a third minute penalty from the boot of Bargoed outside half Josh Prosser separate the sides as the break approached.
Neither side had any clear try scoring opportunities until, in the 39th minute, the Bargoed pack took a ball on the Merthyr put-in. The ball came to wing Lee Pearson who cleared up field.
Merthyr scrambled into touch and from the line out, lock Geraint Edmunds caught and drove, number eight Ross Coombes had a go and then hooker Leigh Meades had a dart but was held up.
Another drive came on as the ball got to Edmunds and over he went for the game’s first try. Prosser converted and Cardiff referee Neil Hennessy blew up for half-time with the Blues 10-0 up.
Bargoed looked more direct from the start of the second-half and they soon got the scoreboard ticking over.
Centre Darren Humphries flew up the wing making forty metres before being stopped, the ball was recycled into centre-field and Merthyr were caught offside. Prosser spurned the three points and kicked to the corner.
The catch and drive came on and as the maul crossed the line Merthyr brought it to ground illegally and referee Hennessy went under the posts for a penalty try. Prosser added the extras to make it 17-0 after 45 minutes.
Another disrupted Merthyr scrum led to the third try. Pearson put a boot to it as the Merthyr eight disintegrated and the chase was on.
Bargoed regained possession and Merthyr were on the back foot. Flanker Grant Rogers spotted a gap and was held up but hooker Leigh Meades smuggled the ball back and ducked under a tackle to cross to take he score to 24-0 with Prosser’s conversion.
The bonus point came with the fourth try in the 78th minute. Merthyr were turned over in midfield and a grubber kick through the middle was followed up by centre Rhys Humphries and wing Lewis Protheroe.
The chasers harried the Merthyr full back into kicking dead and a scrum five ensued.
Given the dominance of the Bargoed scrum there was only one way that this was going to end and the drive came on, Merthyr went down and referee Hennessy went under the posts to signal the game’s second penalty try.
Prosser made it four successful conversions to add to his penalty and Bargoed ran out winners by 31 points to nil.
