A man has been jailed for a knifepoint robbery at a Hengoed convenience store.

Calam Lewis, 22, of no fixed abode, stole £400 from the Graig Stores in Hengoed Road, after threatening the shopkeeper with a knife on January 11 in an attempt to pay off a drug debt.

He admitted robbery and was jailed for two years and ten months by Recorder Andrew Grubb at Newport Crown Court. He was also ordered to pay a £120 victim surcharge.

Speaking after the sentencing Detective Constable Phil Thomas said: “This was a particularly frightening experience for the victim and had the potential for more consequences.

“With the helpful response with information from the community, and the police investigation that followed, a dangerous individual was removed from our streets.

“The evidence gathered had been laid before the court resulting in conviction and sentence.”
