An ex-RAF medic is trekking for six days in Patagonia in a bid to raise £6,000 for Velindre Cancer Centre.

Jovi Slade, from Caerphilly, served for five years in the RAF and now works for the specialist cancer treatment centre in Cardiff.

The 25-year-old will join a team of 20, led by Welsh rugby legend Shane Williams, to walk the track 162 Welsh settlers travelled 150 years ago.

Ms Slade said: “I’ve been working at Velindre for the past year and wanted to do something to improve the hospital.

“The RAF prepared me massively and we have been meeting up to walk up Pen y Fan and Machen mountain.

“I can’t wait, it will be really challenging but will be fun and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone.

“They told us to expect all four seasons in one day, rain, sun, snow, everything. I’m not sure what wildlife there will be but I’m expecting to see a few things.”

Patagonia, which is in Argentina, has an estimated 20,000 people descended from Welsh settlers, with the Welsh language still common and eisteddfodau celebrated.

The team will walk 11 hours a day and will be followed by a second group, led by comedian Rhod Gilbert and members of Blackwood band Manic Street Preachers.
