Plans for new £8m primary school in Rhymney move a step closer

News | | Published: 15:00, Thursday April 2nd, 2015.

Plans to build a new £8 million ‘super’ primary school have moved a step closer.

The old Rhymney Comprehensive School site has been earmarked for the new school which would replace Abertysswg and Pontlottyn primary schools.

The original plan would have also seen Fochriw Primary School replaced with its pupils heading to the new ‘super school’.

However, Fochriw parents gave the plan the thumbs down during a public consultation on the project last year. As a result, the planned new school has been scaled down and Fochriw Primary School will remain.

Members of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet have now agreed to move the project on by agreeing to the publication of a statutory notice to close the two schools.

Cllr Rhianon Passmore, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “It is vital that we engage with everyone involved in this proposed build and merger so we are able to ensure that the plans meet the needs of the pupils, parents, teachers and the community.

“The new school would no doubt be a fantastic facility and offer pupils the opportunity to learn in a state-of-the-art facility.”

The exact location of the proposed new school on the site of the old comprehensive has yet to be decided.

The report, considered by cabinet members on March 25, read: “This is in part to address some of the observations detailed in the consultation regarding the relationship between the primary and secondary school buildings, shared drop-off points and such like, and also to ensure that the overall cost is within the parameters set by Welsh Government as to [the] total cost.
