Caerphilly Morrisons child snatch case dropped

News | | Published: 11:05, Friday April 17th, 2015.

The case against a man accused of attempted abduction has been dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Ahmed Ali, 28, from Newport, was charged with attempted abduction of a 14-year-old girl after an incident in Morrisons car park in Caerphilly town on January 8.

At a hearing at Newport Crown Court in January he was denied bail and was due to appear in court to enter a plea on April 10, but after review by the CPS, the case was dropped.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said the decision to charge and prosecute suspects is made by the CPS.

A CPS spokesperson said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has a duty to keep all cases under review to ensure that they continue to meet the evidential and public interest standards set out in the Code for Crown Prosecutors.
“We recently completed a full review of all the evidence available in the case against Mr Ali.

“This review concluded that there is no longer sufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction in the case.

“All parties involved have been informed of this decision and the reasons for it. The charges against Mr Ali have been discontinued.”
