Rhymney Valley and Caerphilly Schools District Under-11s celebrating their victory at Rodney Parade

Rhymney Valley and Caerphilly Schools District Under-11s rugby union team have won silverware at Newport’s Rodney Parade.

The side defeated Mynydd Mawr and Dinefwr (MMAD) 50-10 on Tuesday April 28 to win the DC Thomas Plate Final.

MMAD scored the first try of the game, but the Caerphilly‑based side responded instantly to level the game. This was quickly followed by a second try, both scored by Tom Thompson.

Finding their rhythm and structure, Rhymney Valley began to take control, adding further tries as the game opened up. Scrum‑half Jaxson Mann was next to cross the whitewash, before strong defensive pressure forced a loose ball that Harri Edwards reacted to quickest, going over for another score.

Sonny Humphries then powered his way over the line, before MMAD mounted a brief resurgence with a well‑earned try.

However, after attempting to catch Rhymney Valley off guard, MMAD’s defence was breached once more as the Caerphilly District side ran in a full‑length try courtesy of Rohun Price, who weaved his way through the backline to extend the lead.

With confidence high and the clock ticking down, Rhymney Valley continued to play the rugby that has defined their season. A sharp show‑and‑go from Alby Flower brought them closer to lifting the cup, before Thompson completed his hat‑trick with a quick‑thinking finish that showcased his pace.

Even with the result all but secured, Rhymney Valley pushed on. Edwards crossed for his second try with another clever show‑and‑go, capping off an impressive team performance.

Huge credit was given to MMAD, who played their part in a brilliant final and battled until the last whistle.

This result capped off a superb season for everyone involved with Rhymney Valley and Caerphilly District, who have displayed quality rugby throughout the year, alongside great togetherness and team spirit.
