Watch Caerphilly Council meetings online

News | | Published: 17:00, Wednesday May 6th, 2015.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has begun broadcasting its meetings live on the internet.

Since the launch of the service on April 21, around 200 people have tuned in by visiting www.caerphilly.gov.uk.
People can watch live meetings and previous ones.

Cllr Barbara Jones, Deputy Leader of the council and Cabinet Member for Corporate Services, said: “Embracing webcasting is an essential step to increasing the engagement with the wider community to participate in local democracy. I am thrilled that we have had a good number of views to date and I am hoping the popularity continues top grow.”

I am tempted to watch these but I feel they would bring about depression and anger as the council unanimously agree to waste another load of taxpayers’ cash.

Dean, I too was tempted, but I, unlike you, I was not able to resist that temptation. and I have to tell you that if you watched it it would not bring about the depression and anger you fear, it would, put you to sleep. What the Caerphilly council should have done of course was to stream a Cabinet Meeting, or, a Policy and resourses Committee meeting, or, a Planning committee meeting, and then it would be seen in stark clarity what the council actually do.

There is no doubt that by screening, these proceedings, and watching them, one can make judgements on the abilities of the individuals we elect, their effectiveness as our representatives whilst making contributions to local democracy, and whether they do so at all.

The problem is though, currently the Council Cabinet Meetings are NOT on line, neither are the Committees which spend the money. The Council meeting currently for up for viewing is no more than a `safe` example of public exposure of Caerphilly Council, sycophantic backslapping and appropriate head nodding and hand clapping. Give it two years, when the next Council elections are due and then see it warm up, they will all be on their feet fighting like pit bulls.

But the only way to see what you want to see Dean is to get the Council to expose its Committees at work, and, to particularly expose the work of the Cabinet, and, I include the good work, the good elected members do, on behalf of citizens of the Borough.

Or a secret remuneration panel meeting; now that would be interesting!
