Welsh Government announces funding for veterans

News | | Published: 18:00, Monday May 11th, 2015.

The Welsh Government has announced an extra £100,000 to support veterans and serving military personal in Wales every year.

The new funding will go to Veterans NHS Wales, which is the UK’s only national, dedicated service to support the emotional and mental health needs of armed forces veterans by providing dedicated veterans’ therapists in each health board.

Good, but I wish today’s politicians were not so fond of sending our our armed forces into harms way for no particular reason. I also do not agree with the closure of the military hospitals which were the ideal places to treat veterans who ha suffered physical or mental damage in battle.

Although an increase in funding is very welcome – how does £100K stack up against the actual costs required? And what about other services injured veterans may badly need…

Is this funding purely for Welsh veterans as it is funded by the Welsh NHS or is it open to veterans across the UK? or even Europe if they wish to come to Wales?

I’m sure this will raise some debate?

I am sure the one doctor this money will pay for will make a world of different. The government should scrap child benefit and direct £3bn of the £4.5bn into post-war care for soldiers.
