Risca music teacher receives BBC Unsung Hero Award

HONOURED: Meryl Jeanne Gittins from Risca has been named an unsung hero of music by the BBC

A former music teacher from Risca has been honoured by the BBC for her community contribution.

Meryl Gittins from Risca, was one of five recipients of the BBC’s Unsung Hero Award for work in their community with music.

The award was launched as part of this year’s inaugural BBC Music Day on Friday June 5.

Born and raised in Risca, Meryl taught Music from 1974 to 2008 and has nurtured, encouraged and given opportunities to thousands of children.

During her 24 years at T?-Sign Primary School in Risca, Meryl developed a renowned school choir which became an integral part of the community.
