Caerphilly County Borough Council has agreed to buy Markham Resource Centre from Gwent Police in a £57,500 deal.
The building, a former police station is currently leased from Gwent Police Authority and is used by social services to provide support to 14 people with learning disabilities.
Cabinet agreed to the purchase of Markham Resource Centre for £57,500, which will be met from the Social Services capital budget. The lease was to have run out in 2022 and council officers had worked out that buying the centre would save the council nearly £12,000 over the next 11 years.
Cllr Judith Pritchard, cabinet member for social services, said: “This excellent service focuses on supporting service users to develop their skills and independence, both within the Resource Centre itself and the wider community.
“I am delighted that cabinet agreed to the purchase of the centre, which in addition to delivering an annual revenue saving of £5,750 will more importantly continue to support the development of day opportunities for the service users.”
The service at Markham Resource Centre provides support for a wide range of needs such as personal care, epilepsy, eating and drinking, moving and handling, administering medication and challenging behaviour.
