A 51-year-old woman from Blackwood has been named among the 38 victims of the Tunisian beach shooting.

Trudy Jones was holidaying in the country with friends and been due to return home on Sunday to go back to work at the Highfields Nursing Home in Blackwood.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “Whilst formal identification has yet to take place, its believed that Trudy Jones, aged 51 from Blackwood was among the victims killed in Tunisia on Friday June 26. Gwent Police is providing support to the family.

“Ms Jones was a divorced single mother of four on holiday with friends.”

Ms Jones’ family have released the following through their family liaison officer

“Our mother of all people didn’t deserve this, such a caring person who put everyone else before herself. Always willing to help others, she loved everyone around her including all of the people she cared for at work. She’ll be missed by so many people.

“She was the rock of our family and kept us all going.

“None of us have a clue how we’re going to cope without her. We are all devastated and would appreciate if everyone can respect our privacy. Please leave us grieve our beautiful mother.”

Islwyn MP Chris Evans said the reality of the attack had been home.

He said: “When the news broke of the evil attack on innocent holidaymakers in Tunisia we knew it was likely that British citizens were among the casualties.

“The reality of this horrific and brutal attack has now been brought home to our communities with the news that Trudy Jones of Blackwood is among those murdered. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this difficult time.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr David Poole, said: “On behalf of all at Caerphilly County Borough Council, our thoughts and sympathies are very much with the families and friends of all those affected by this terrible tragedy.

“Of course, for us these events have been brought even closer to home. Blackwood is a strong, tight-knit community and I have no doubt that our whole community will pull together and show their unrelenting support for the family, friends and those close to Trudy Jones during this time.”

On Friday June 26, a lone gunman opened fire on innocent tourists on a beach in Sousse.

Tunisian student Seifeddine Rezgui, 23, who has reported links with Islamic State, opened fire on tourists at noon. It has been reported that Rezgui shot at people on the beach near the Imperial Marhaba and Bellevue hotels.

He then entered at least one of the hotel lobbies and detonated grenades before walking through the streets firing at locals who were chasing him. He was eventually shot dead by police.

The Foreign Office has yet to officially name any of the British victims with the BBC reporting that the delay is because of “stringent Tunisian regulations”.

It has put the official death toll of UK nationals at 15, but that figure is likely to rise to at least 30.
