Morgan Jones councillor calls public meeting to discuss budget

News | | Published: 14:00, Monday June 29th, 2015.

A Caerphilly County Borough councillor has called a public meeting to ask residents for their say on next year’s council budget.

Cllr James Pritchard, Labour ward member for the Morgan Jones ward, will host the meeting and is inviting everybody in his ward to share their views on which services should be prioritised as well as calling for ideas on future investment priorities.

Cllr Pritchard said: “The public meeting is being called to properly gauge the views of residents living in the Morgan Jones ward on council services. It shouldn’t all be about cuts though, and that’s why I’ll be asking for views on local ward priorities that we can work together on to deliver. It’s crucial that people living in the Morgan Jones ward are properly consulted on important matters such as the council budget by councillors.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council had to find £12m savings last year and a similar amount is required in 2016/17.

The public meeting will take place at St Catherine’s Church Hall in Caerphilly town on Thursday July 2, at 7pm.

A good initiative, the residents are the paymasters and any improvement in consulting with them is to be applauded.

The Town Council will shortly (by August hopefully) have information on council spending on the website too. Residents will be able to make comments and suggestions via a questionaire.

This is the Town Council, CCBC will have to make their own arrangements. The information and survey page will be advertised when it goes live, hopefully including an advert or article in Caerphilly Observer.

The page has been prepared and is awaiting further data that councillors, including me, have asked to be included. This would be the total cost, based on the previous year’s figure, of the Town Council’s spending on several different categories.
