Call for action over Asda trolleys dumped on Caerphilly town estate

News | | Published: 09:00, Monday July 13th, 2015.

Action is being demanded from supermarket giant Asda over the dumping of its shopping trolleys on the Churchill Park housing estate in Caerphilly town.

Councillors Phil Bevan and Mike Prew, whose Morgan Jones ward includes Pontygwindy Road where the store is sited, have met local residents fed up with the trolleys spoiling the green spaces on the estate.

Cllr Phil Bevan said: “Dumped trolleys have been a problem ever since the former Carrefour hypermarket opened decades ago, but the situation has definitely worsened recently.”

Churchill Park Neighbourhood Watch contacted the Asda store to raise concerns with them about the problem and there has been a meeting with Asda management and a local resident.

The Churchill Park Junior Neighbourhood Watch has been involved in rounding up the trolleys from around the Estate, and taking them back to Asda

Cllr Bevan said: “The dumped trolleys are an eyesore and spoil the look of the estate, while inevitably children mess about with them and cause problems for residents.

An Asda spokesperson said: “The majority of our customers can be trusted to use trolleys appropriately, but we’d plead once again with the minority of people that do take them off site and abandon them to stop doing so, and ask anyone else that sees one abandoned to give us a call so that we can go and collect it.”

The company said they do regular patrols to collect trolleys removed from the store and urged residents to call Trolley Wise on 0800 3161241 to report any problems.

What to do about the eternal problem of abandoned shopping trolleys, if a supermarket is good enough to provide a shopping trolley for it’s customers then the correct etiquette is to return the trolley back to a bay provided when the customer has completed their shopping. The problem is that people have forgotten how to behave and simple manners are virtually non existent in todays society, those who abandon their trolley in the middle of a car park are just as bad as those who take it away all together, it’s bone idleness, bad manners and a total lack of respect. The trolleys should be fitted with a self destruct system that causes instant death to the idle person who does not return it to the bay, failing that perhaps the Welsh Assembly could become the first country in the world to ban shopping trolleys as they’re always looking for something that they can be first to bring in legislation for.

Do not blame ASDA, blame the people on the estate who take the trolley to their home and dump them on the estate. It is not as if ASDA pays someone to dump its trolleys, or as if the trolleys magically transport themselves to the estate at night when no one is looking (they come alive like the toys in Toy Story). Neighbourhood watch should be calling for fines on the people who dump trolleys there.

Walking a dog through Churchill park on several occasions I have returned shopping trolleys. Can’t remember how many times I have done this or how many trolleys I have returned (it’s over ten) but every time I have done this there are two words on my lips and in my mind. Selfish scum! It’s just a breakdown in manners and any sense of responsibility to your own community. I think the sixties eroded any sense of shame and Tony Blair mopped up and disposed of the rest of it.

It’s the folks of Churchill Park themselves that take trollies onto Churchill Park. I’ve seen them myself , many, many times . Much easier to blame ASDA though , right ? Maybe the residents association should speak to…….their follow residents ? Maybe the self appointed chief spokeswoman of Churchill Park should knock on the doors of the folks she claims to represent and ask them to stop stealing our trollies instead of hastling us. Maybe Phil Bevan should get a proper job. We have a vacancy for a car park porter at the moment , come on Phil , join the Asda team and work in the car park of Asda Caerphilly for one week then see who you think causes this problem. Come on Phil , four hundred colleagues are daring you to !!!

Councillors collecting Trollies? dont be daft, they have already been elected, why would they feel the need to do any “work”????? it would also be interesting to know if the residents `spokeswoman`, speaks for anyone else other than Councillors Mike Prew and Phil Bevan?.

Councillor Phil Bevan and Councillor Mike Prew say “Dumped trolleys have been a problem ever since the former Carrefour hypermarket opened decades ago, but the situation has definitely worsened recently.” Well Well what a revelation, at last these Councillors have found a passing wagon to hitch a ride on in order to try to revive their collective failing profiles amongst residents and voters, given, that their ward Labour Party Colleague Councillor Jamie Pritchard has recently held a meeting with all residents in the ward to discuss anything which concerns them, and has already tacked the problems of abandond trollies and other issue on the estate, these Plaid Cymru Councillors really should get out more.

This is a case of Plaid Cymru Councillors following where Labour councillor Jamie Pritchard leads. This particular Wagon has already left the area, I suggest Councillor Bevan and Prew keep a keener eye out for the next one.
