The Healthcare Inspectorate Wales watchdog is to carry out an independent review of mental health services following the murder of 22-year-old Cerys Yemm in Argoed last year.
Cerys, 22, was discovered covered in blood inside the Sirhowy Arms Hotel on November 6. She had gone back to the hotel room of Matthew Williams, 34, after meeting him on a night out.
But she was killed by the recently-released prisoner. It was reported at the time that Williams had allegedly carried out a cannibal attack on Cerys. He later died after being tasered by police.
A post mortem examination on Cerys carried out by Home Office pathologist Dr Richard Jones recorded a provisional cause of death as sharp force trauma to the face and neck.
Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) has launched a review into the tragic incident and has revealed that Williams was known to three mental health services at Aneurin Bevan, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg and Cardiff and Vale health boards.
It said the review will investigate the care, medical history and events surrounding the murder “to provide an understanding and background to the fatal incident”.
HIW will report its findings and will make recommendations for improvement. The report is due to be published early next year.
Earlier this year Cerys’ mother Paula called for the Sirhowy Arms to be demolished.
