Foster children from across South Wales were given a medieval experience at Caerphilly Castle, thanks to a new scheme supported by Cadw.

On July 21, Action for Children held a fostering families picnic where 25 families took part in interactive sessions with a real-life ‘knight’.

In the Great Hall they helped set tables, as if for a medieval banquet, and learnt about manners and mealtimes during the middle ages.

The free event was part of a new initiative that gives foster children, and the families who care for them, the chance to visit all of the historic monuments in Cadw’s care free of charge.

Ken Skates, Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said: “I’m delighted that Cadw and Action for Children have been able to bring this annual event to such an iconic site — and that so many fostering families were able to take part.

“We are looking forward to making more positive differences to young people in care through this continued collaboration.”
