Social landlords in project to provide support for domestic abuse victims

News | | Published: 15:00, Friday August 21st, 2015.

Social housing providers are taking part in a project to tackle domestic abuse.

Around 90% of women helped by Women’s Aid live in rented, mainly social, housing.

The ‘Domestic Abuse in Housing – Improving Our Response’ project aims to help tenants in Gwent suffering from domestic abuse, by raising awareness among landlords.

Social landlords taking part include Bron Afon Community Housing, Charter Housing, Caerphilly County Borough Council, Melin Homes, United Welsh Housing Association, Derwen Cymru and Tai Calon Community Housing.

Newly appointed project manager Ceridwen Wood said: “I’m really pleased to be working on such an important project and one which I believe will make a real difference to those affected by domestic abuse.

“My role will be to bring that work together, to see how we could be even more effective in how we respond to domestic abuse.”

It would be much better if these Housing providers did that, use the huge amount of public money they are givern, to provide more social housing, and leave law enforcement to the experts.

This dabbling in things which they or their staff are not highly trained to deal with is dangerous. They already fail, in many cases to build on any confidence there may be, in them as landlords, by thier tenents preferring to spend their money on issues like this, and, on Commercial buildings which has nothing to do with Housing needy people and families, the Welsh Assembly should hold a formal inquiry into the way these people are diverting money for homes into other projects which have nothing to do with housing at all. Housing Associations??????

I can’t think why landlords now have a duty to provide any other service to its tenants other than a properly maintained property. What on earth has it got to do with them? You’re correct in what you say regards training, as this just seems to be a shifting of responsibility onto the unqualified.

Correct; It has long been the case that housing associations, particularly a number of those covering social housing resposibility across Caerphilly Borough, have devised inventive ways of spending Welsh Assembly and UK Government Housing Aid, on matters which have nothing whatever to do with housing, let alone Social Housing provision.

Much of their funds are diverted into projects that are NOT housing related, and, because each HA is a charity registered by guarantee thy consider that to own property ( other than that devoted to accommodating residents) is OK, they then chose to do sweetheart deals with organisations, some being with private companies, to use those properties at peppercorn rents. In my view failing to manage public funds properly, failing to property manage their commercial propery portfolio so that government and Welsh Assembly grants could be reduced due to the income thosr properies should generate. They are administrators of housing accommodation, they are funded with public funds as such, and some authority needs to assess these proposals, and tske responsibility for them.

And now to find they a meddling and straying into very delicate private, family affairs, and criminal enforcement, is alarming.
I wonder who or what regulatory authority will have to justify this outfits stroll into such serious and delicate issues when something goes tragically wrong because of their meddling?.
