A 61-year old from Caerphilly is chopping off her long locks in memory of her late husband on their anniversary.

Tina Morgan will have her 19 inch plait cut to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre on would have been her and husband Gary’s 43rd wedding anniversary after he died from lung cancer in May.

Mrs Morgan said: “Gary, my soul mate and husband of almost 43 years, found out on April 29 that he had lung cancer and it progressed so fast that by May 31 he passed away.

I am devastated at how quick it all happened and I miss him so much that I feel I should do something to help raise funds for Velindre and awareness on the devastating effect cancer can have.”

The big chop will take place on September at Cracked Actors on Pontygwindy Road inCaerphilly at 9.30am.

The hair will be sent to the Little Princess Trust who make real hair wigs for children with cancer.

Kylie McKee, Deputy Head of Fundraising at Velindre, said: “What Tina is doing is amazing, not only having her hair lovely long hair cut off, but to do it on such a special day to raise funds for Velindre and awareness of this terrible disease is just remarkable.”

I respect the cause they are supporting but I think they are silly for chopping off their own hair – unless they actually want to be bald or have a pixie hair cut in which case it is justifiable.

My hatred extends further to all of the people who do things for charity. I am a person who donates to charity but I would not sponsor someone to do something silly. I would rather just give them the money than expect them to do something like skydiving, cutting their hair, or walking a marathon. If they have time to do all of those things they may as well fund-raise while working part time in a shop to boost the money earnt for charity.
