Donald Braithwaite and Sir Simon Boyle (right)
Two Caerphilly County Borough residents have been presented with their British Empire Medals for their outstanding work and services to the community.
Donald Braithwaite, of Llanbradach, received the honour for his services to boxing for young people in Caerphilly, while Katherine Hughes was presented for her voluntary service to the community of Caerphilly and the environment in Wales.
Both were named in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours and were presented with their medals recently by the Lord-Lieutenant of Gwent Sir Simon Boyle.
Mr Braithwaite, enjoyed a successful and distinguished career as an amateur boxer who represented Wales in the 1958 Empire Games, held in Cardiff, and later turned professional. He has dedicated 46 years to training youngsters in the sport.
Ms Hughes, from Caerphilly, received the honour for her voluntary service to the community of Caerphilly and the environment in Wales. Described as a tireless and eloquent advocate for the views of those who would otherwise have no voice,
Katherine has made a significant voluntary contribution through her involvement with organisations such as the restoration of the Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital and Keep Wales Tidy.
Good to see it.
Well deserved, Don a true Gent 🙂
