Jack’s Appeal to benefit from card competition

School pupils are being given the chance to design Christmas cards to raise money for Jack’s Appeal.

Welsh Hearts are launching the competition for school age children to design a festive card that will be sold to raise cash for the appeal, set-up by the parents of Oakdale boy Jack Thomas.

Every comprehensive school in Caerphilly County Borough now houses a defibrillator thanks to the appeal launched after Jack passed away aged 15 from an undiagnosed heart condition.

His mother, June Thomas, aims to have defibrillators in all public buildings by passing ‘Jack’s Law’, to make it illegal for public buildings not to have one.

As part of the competition, pupils can draw, paint or photograph their entries. There will be three winners, one of which will receive a free defibrillator and CPR training for their school.

Sharon Owen, Charity Director at Welsh Hearts said: “To date Jack’s Appeal has raised an amazing £37,484.1. The appeal has also funded a heart screening programme which is taking place across South Wales in secondary schools to detect heart abnormalities in young people to manage any underlying heart conditions that they may not know of.

“Welsh Hearts are also raising money to fund a further six heart screening sessions which will take place across Wales in 2016 for a wider age group of 14 to 35-year-olds.”
