Leisure centre use increases across Caerphilly County Borough

News | | Published: 13:06, Tuesday October 13th, 2015.

The number of people using leisure centres across Caerphilly County Borough has risen by 8%, latest council figures have revealed.

During 2014/15, more than 1.38 million visits were recorded in Caerphilly County Borough Council’s 11 leisure centres and its Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach.

According to the council, over the last three years dryside visits, such as for football, netball and racquet sports, have increased by 22%.

The council has said this is down to new 3G pitches at New Tredegar Leisure Centre and Risca Leisure Centre as well as Ystrad Mynach.

Cllr Nigel George, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services, said: “We have demonstrated our commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of residents by investing in facilities across the county borough.

“We will continue to support residents to lead healthier lifestyles and become more active more often.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council is currently consulting on a review of its leisure centres.

Cefn Fforest, Pontllanfraith, the Sue Noakes Centre near Ystrad Mynach, Heolddu and New Tredegar have been recommended for closing. Aberbargoed, Bargoed and

Caerphilly town could get new leisure centres under the shake-up. No decision has been made on any of the recommendations.

Hi David, this has been put forward as a very initial savings proposal for 2017/18 – however, no decision will be made any time soon and this will not form part of the council’s savings proposals for 2016/17.

All the more reason to put their running into residents’ hands. CCBC cannot run a party let alone leisure centres.
