Rugby Union: Bedwas get payout from Merthyr RFC over Phill Rees signing

Sport | | Published: 11:00, Tuesday November 3rd, 2015.

Bedwas RFC have won a “substantial” compensation payment following a dispute of the eligibility of the transfer of one its players to Merthyr Tydfil RFC.

Bedwas RFC Chairman, Mark Lewis, confirmed they have accepted an offer of compensation of an undisclosed amount, following a dispute over Phill Rees.

According to Bedwas RFC, Rees had signed a new contract for 2015/16, becoming club captain in the process.

Despite this, Rees was approached by Merthyr RFC and offered a contract with them which he accepted.

Mr Lewis said: “We tried to resolve the matter through discussion but were ultimately left with no alternative but to commence legal action – which we did.

“Fortunately, common sense prevailed and I am pleased to confirm that we have accepted an offer of compensation from Merthyr RFC. Both Clubs now consider this matter to be closed.”

Merthyr RFC have been contacted for comment.
