Rugby Union: Bargoed lose to Swansea in the Swalec Championship

Bargoed outscored second-placed Swansea by four tries to three, but it was the boot of Whites’ outside-half Jac Wilson that proved decisive as the home side clung on to take the spoils in a physical encounter at St Helens on Saturday, January 30.

Second-placed Swansea had to battle long and hard before finally overpowering reigning champions Bargoed 30-24.

Wilson ran the show for the home side, claiming 20 of Swansea’s 30 points, with the other points coming from a penalty try and a Sam Kiley touchdown.

The bonus point meant the All Whites didn’t lose any ground on table-topping Merthyr, while Bargoed’s losing bonus point kept them within 14 points of fourth-placed RGC1404 with two games in hand.

Four teams are due to be promoted at the end of the season and the top five clubs now all have the necessary WRU ‘A’ Licence to play in the Principality Premiership.

Newbridge’s home match against Glynneath was postponed due to the pitch conditions at the Welfare Ground.

Tata Steel’s win over Llanharan RFC means Newbridge move down a league place into 11th.
