Rugby League: South Wales Scorpions in Cup upset

Sport | | Published: 13:00, Friday March 4th, 2016.

South Wales Scorpions suffered a shock loss to National Conference League side Featherstone Lions on Saturday February 27, exiting the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup in the third round.

Featherstone were deserved winners, taking an early opportunity when John Hardcastle wrestled his way over for a well-taken try which Ian Jackson converted.

Two more tries followed for the hosts, one coming after Scorpions were reduced to 12 men.

Scorpions did manage to score before the break, Dai Evans touching down in the corner, but their hard work was undone when they conceded a fourth try. Joe Fox scored for Lions to make it 22-4 at half time.

Lions started the second half as they finished the first, Dyas intercepting well to score an unconverted try.

Chris Vitalini sparked a Scorpions resistance, however, as he waltzed through a gap in the Lions defence and Emanuelli scored, before a brilliant try from Evans hauled the Welsh back in it.

But Lions sealed things ten minutes later with two more tries and a drop-goal sandwiching a consolation Scorpions score by Rhys Davies. Final score 37-20.
