Veteran Caerphilly Plaid Cymru councillor Phil Bevan should be admitted into the Gorsedd of the Bards for his contribution to the Welsh language in the South Wales Valleys, says former Assembly Member and council leader Lindsay Whittle.
Cllr Whittle said Cllr Bevan, pictured in the story left, has worked tirelessly for 40 years to develop Welsh medium education.
He said: “There are now 3,000 children being educated through the medium of Welsh in Caerphilly county thanks to Phil’s tireless work. It is because of people like Phil that parents can choose to have their children educated in the Welsh language.
“Although he does not speak the language fluently, I believe he should be admitted to the Gorsedd of the Bards. The language can be in your head or heart.
“In the past members of the Royal Family, sports personalities, actors and politicians have been admitted. It would be a travesty of justice if Phil is not recognised. An honour that would fill his heart with pride.”
