A darts ace from Cwmfelinfach has progressed to a national final for the right to win a £5,000 prize.

Jarrod Powell, 47, won a qualifying heat at Cwtchers Sports Bar in Newbridge to earn a place at the Worthington’s 2016 Darts Champions of Champions Final, in Cardiff on Sunday, August 28.

Jarrod, a plastic injection mould engineer from Cwmfelinfach, Blackwood, topped a field of hopefuls, outscoring Glamorgan County Youth and Senior team player Jess Bonner in the heat final with a double-ten finish to clinch victory.

The Worthington’s 2016 Champion of Champions Final, which take place at St. David’s Hall, Cardiff, will see 256 darts players – all winners of qualifying events held around the country – compete for a total prize fund of £18,500 in a best-of-three-legs format.

Jarrod, who uses 26 gram Red Dragon Firefly darts and is known throughout the sport as ‘Super Ja’, plays club darts for Cross Keys RFC in the Risca Darts League and Gwent Super League. He’s no stranger to top flight darts having represented Gwent across the UK.

Jarrod said: “I’m really looking forward to the finals, and have to thank my sponsors S+A Auto Repairs as their support has helped me qualify.

“It’s a big day with some of the best known names in the game, such as last year’s winner Gerwyn Price, Barrie Bates, Paul Hogan and Wes Newton.

“Many of my darting friends have qualified and I can’t wait to catch up with them. But it will be business first and then time to socialise.”
