Commuters coming home from Cardiff had to be evacuated at Caerphilly railway station after a fire broke out underneath the train they were travelling on.

Passengers were safely evacuated to the station’s north platform with no injuries.

There was severe disruption to all Rhymney Valley services which lasted until around 9.40pm.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it was called at around 5.26pm with reports of a fire underneath a train. Crews first reached the scene within ten minutes.

Around 25 firefighters from Caerphilly, Whitchurch, Pontypridd and Cardiff, were in attendance with six appliances, including those with specialist equipment.

Eye-witnesses report that smoke was seen as the train pulled out of Queen Street station in Cardiff.

A spokesperson for Arriva Trains Wales said: “We can confirm there has been a fire at Caerphilly station. All the passengers have been safely evacuated from the carriage and we are waiting for more information.”
