Golf: Local golfer misses out on grand final spot

An amateur golfer from Bargoed has missed out on an expenses-paid trip of a lifetime to Morocco after falling just short of the required score.

Andrew Edwards, 53, was aiming for a place in the grand final of the 2016 Morocco Matchplay tournament, which will be held in Marrakech, Morocco, in February next year.

The Bargoed-based plumber, a 10-handicapper, scored 29 points at Woodbury Park, in Devon, at southern regional singles final, but it wasn’t enough to earn him a seat on the plane for the grand final.

Yet it was the latest step in golfing rehabilitation for Mr Edwards, who, following a motorcycle accident in 1991, was told he would never play golf again.

He started playing again four years ago at Bargoed Golf Club, and the Morocco Matchplay is just one of two finals he has reached this year.

The 2017 grand final will be played at the PalmGolf Marrakech Palmeraie course, after featuring at Moroccon capital Rabat in 2015, and Essaouira earlier this year.

Four competitions culminate at the grand final: singles, pairs, mixed pairs and senior pairs, with 32 golfers from across the UK fighting it out for the titles.
