Just two weeks after retaining her World Taekwondo Federation Junior World Championship title, Blackwood teenager Lauren Williams has been named as Young Sportswoman of the Year at the Wales Sport Awards.

The 17-year-old, who also became senior European champion and won the Greece and Polish Opens earlier this year, was presented with the award at the BBC Cymru Wales Sports Personality 2016 ceremony in Cardiff on Monday December 5.

Lauren’s fellow taekwondo competitor and double Olympic gold medal winner Jade Jones won the main award for the second time.

Speaking about Jones, Lauren said: “Jade’s impact is absolutely massive.

“She trains with us, and to be around athletes like her, to have that elite level, to train with that every day is just massively motivating for myself and the rest of us around them.

“She’s the reason I found the sport.”
