Volunteers recognised at Sport Caerphilly awards ceremony

CLUB OF THE YEAR: Bedwas Gymnastics Club collects its Sport Caerphilly award

Sporting volunteers from across Caerphilly County Borough have been recognised at an annual awards ceremony.

Nominees attended the Sport Caerphilly awards at Bryn Meadows Golf Club, Maesycwmmer, on Tuesday January 24, where dedicated volunteers were recognised in five awards categories.

Chloe Price, from Newbridge, won Young Volunteer of the Year for her work with Sport Caerphilly, including over 150 hours of voluntary work during the summer holidays last year.

Jane McCann was awarded Volunteer of the Year for her work with Startlets Netball Club, after dedicating over 25 hours of her week to supporting and promoting the sport across the borough.

Inclusive Coach of the Year was presented to Tyler Price for his work coaching inequality groups swimming, including women, girls, and those with disabilities. He also coaches at Newbridge Otters Swim Club, and has seen membership double from 12 to 25.

Sarah Llewellyn won the Community Coach of the Year award, after dedicating more than 16 hours to Trecelyn Netball Club in Newbridge.

Bedwas Gymnastics Club won Club of the Year, after it moved into its own facility in February last year, and welcomed over 150 new members.

Six volunteers were also entered into the Lifetime to Sport in Caerphilly Hall of Fame in recognition of their great enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to sport over a prolonged period of time.

Those inducted included:

• Dave Randall, chairman at AC Pontymister for 23 years, presiding over the club’s most successful period winning eight trophies in ten years.

• Julie Proctor, head coach at Caerphilly Dragonflies Trampoline Club for 13 years.

• Lyn Hall, who has held several roles, including player, treasurer, groundsman, committee member, umpire and press officer, for Blackwood Town Cricket Club and Blackwood RFC for nearly 60 years.

• Mike Heare, who has been involved with running clubs in the borough for 30 years.

• Peter Key, coach at Caerphilly County Swim Squad for 27 years and the Dragons Disability Swim Squad for the last 12 years.

•Wayne Thomas, coach and chairman at Pengam Boys and Girls Club for over 25 years.

Cllr Nigel George, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services said: “The Sport Caerphilly Awards provide a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge the fantastic work that is done by Community Coaches and volunteers throughout Caerphilly County Borough.

“Well done to everyone involved.”
