Tesco Express in Trethomas has once again been targeted by thieves with a break-in.

Gwent Police said it was called at 3.48am today, Wednesday, July 26, with reports of a dark-coloured car driving off at speed towards Machen.

It is believed alcohol was stolen, although exact details have yet to be disclosed by Gwent Police.

The front shop window was smashed and it looks as if thieves got in that way.

A sign on the door of the Newport Road shop read: “Due to shop break-in, we are closed until further notice. Sorry for any inconvenience.”

The store has been targeted by thieves at least twice in the past four years.

In August 2015, £10,000 worth of damage was caused when copper piping was stolen from a generator outside the store. The piping was worth just £20, but damage to the generator meant the freezers and chillers turned off.

Around £5,000 worth of food was spoiled.

In June 2013, cigarettes worth £15,000 were stolen from the store.
