Austerity must not be an excuse to deprive children of the opportunity to learn and perform music, Islwyn Assembly Member Rhianon Passmore has said.

The former music teacher made the comments at an event at the National Assembly for Wales celebrating Welsh musical performance.

The event, sponsored by Ms Passmore, included performances from singer Sir Bryn Terfel and harpist Catrin Finch and was held in Cardiff Bay on Wednesday, July 19.

Ms Passmore said: “Wales requires a national music strategy for Welsh children. A strategy that provides equivalent access to musical education for children living in every corner of our nation.

“Austerity must not be an excuse to deprive children of the opportunity to learn and perform music.

“Music can be truly transformational for children in particular if they come from deprived backgrounds.

Sir Bryn said: “I was delighted to support this wonderful celebration of Welsh music, demonstrating the National Assembly’s commitment to the strength of our musical and cultural life, Gwlâd beirdd a chantorion.”
