Plans for a new 350-home development at Virginia Park Golf Club in Caerphilly have been unveiled.
Moves to develop the area were first made by planning consultants Barton Willmore in January this year when they lodged pre-application plans with Caerphilly County Borough Council.
It was initially thought that up to 400 homes could be built, although a new public consultation has revealed the number to be 350.
Campaigners, including councillors and a residents’ action group, are due to meet soon to decide how to battle the plans.
In a joint statement, county borough councillors James Pritchard and Shayne Cook, and town councillor Shelly Hodder, said there was opposition to the scheme.
They said: “In January 2017 we held a 100-strong public meeting to gather views of local residents.
“Since that meeting we agreed to form a local action group with residents to meet to discuss the next steps to fight the application.
“We’ve contacted the action group and all local Plaid Cymru members to request a joint meeting to make sure we all show a united front against this application by working together.
“This is what we will continue to do.”
Cai Parry, Planner at Barton Willmore, said: “Planning consultants, Barton Willmore, are carrying out a public consultation with GHR Developments Ltd to transform a brownfield former landfill site into a residential development of up to 350 homes, including much-needed affordable homes for younger people.
“The proposed scheme will be built on land at Virginia Park Golf Club, which closed earlier this year due to it no longer being financially viable.
“While the entire landfill site will be remediated as part of the proposed development, approximately half of it will be utilised for much-needed housing with the remaining land to be dedicated to public open space use.”
Residents can visit www.landatvirginiapark.co.uk for more information about the proposed development and how to submit their views on it.
I can only imagine the back hander’s somebody in the Council is getting for this..
The money to continue to pay the Caerphilly 3 has got to come from somewhere.
there are far too many houses in the Caerffili basin already. This destruction of a valuable leisure facilty is going to make life worse for the people of the town.
There will be no point in carrying out the road improvements at Pwll-y-Pant – improving an already congested road and then adding to the congestion from the 3 new planned housing estates
Well here we go again, more houses at this end of the valley to be built on an area that floods. We keep building in an area that have substandard roads, substandard schools, diminished leisure facilities, all contributing to a declining standard of life for existing residents. Will we protest? Yes we will! Will we win? Maybe. Will we learn? Probably not, we will just vote back in the Labour and Plaid Councillors that let this all happen yet again.
What a wast of green area
