A Blackwood man who died of a suspected overdose was facing ten historic sexual assault charges in a London court.

John Egan, 54, pictured above, died at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport on Monday, October 23, after police officers were called to his home on Cefn Fforest Avenue, in Blackwood following concerns for his safety.

He had been due to enter pleas to ten sexual assault charges between 1978 and 1984 at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court in London on the same day.

When he failed to attend, a warrant for his arrest without bail was issued.

Egan faced a string of charges including rape, indecent assault and actual bodily harm.

A French polisher by trade, his work took him to Blackwood from north London in 1996.

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said the death is not being treated as suspicious.
