Caerphilly Boxing Club is celebrating its first competition win.
The club, which was established in the town earlier this year, was represented by young fighter Jak Williams at a packed Beechgrove Club in Gelligaer.
Williams’ opponent, Chepstow ABC’s Lewis Connor, would prove a tough competitor, bigger in both weight and height and an awkward Southpaw fighter.
Both boxers started well, but Williams’ excellent footwork and hand speed to get in and out of range caused Connor problems.
Some effective shots to the body and head were followed by a left hook landing flush, and the referee issued a standing eight count to the Chepstow boxer.
In the second round, Connor came out at a fast pace knowing he was behind in the points. He showed strength and toughness but Williams continued to have better accuracy.
Needing a perfect round if he was to be in with a chance of winning, Connor landed good straight shots in the final round, but they were infrequent. Williams’ left hook drew another eight count from the referee, and earned him the fight with an unanimous points decision.
Caerphilly Boxing Club coach Jon Scriven said: “I am absolutely over the moon with Jak’s performance tonight, he’s only 16 and has bags of talent. Jak has done himself and the club proud.”
Fellow coach Michael Ward added: “He always puts in the hard work in the gym so he really deserved it. This is the first win of many to come for Caerphilly.”
