Two 22-year-old players are jetting out to the 2018 Rugby League Commonwealth Championships with the Welsh squad.

Torfaen Tigers Jake Thomas from Bargoed and Valley Cougars Rhys Gant from Caerphilly are both in the squad.

The Rugby League Nines tournament will be held at Dolphin Stadium on 23 and 24 February 2018, in the lead-up to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Championships will showcase ten Commonwealth nations including Australia, England, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.

The tournament is endorsed by the Commonwealth Games Federation and is classed as an exhibition sport. The aim is for it to become a full medal sport in 2026.

Wales won bronze four years ago in Glasgow, and they will again take on old foe Australia, who were the 2014 silver medallists.

Fiji and Scotland are also in Group A and will be formidable opponents for the Welsh squad.

Wales under 23 assistant coach Mark Robinson is from Warrington and is grateful to Rugby Super League for their help in Welsh preparations for the prestigious competition.

“Warrington Wolves have been fantastic and we want to thank everybody at the club for allowing us to use their facilities.

“We had a good team-building session in the Warrington Wolves’ gym and trained hard in the indoor training barn at their Chester University base.

“We have done everything that the Super League players use on a day-to-day basis.

“It was great for the lads and they’ll got a lot out of it in preparation for what will be a tough tournament,” Robinson explained.
