The winner of an open art competition organised by Caerphilly town’s Y Galeri has been chosen.

The first prize of £750 at the event at Y Galeri at The Twyn, Caerphilly, went to retired lecturer Ian Fisher of Llanelli for his piece “Blodeuwedd and Pedigree Moon” and the second prize of £250 was won by Cardiff-based Haf Weighton for “Spillers”. While the visitors’ choice winner was Lorraine Howells from Treforest, who won £50.

The two had their prizes presented to them by Caerphilly Town Mayor Simon Morgan.

There were 200 entries, with 12 highly-commended entries, for the competition prizes sponsored by Caerphilly Town Council.

Cllr Morgan said: “The town council may sponsor the event but it owes its success to the hard work of Y Galeri owners Jan and Gareth Pennell.

“The event draws entries from all over the UK and has helped a number of artists to kick-start their careers, so we are proud to be associated with the competition.

“What’s more Y Galeri, itself, draws visitors into Caerphilly town and we wish it continued success.”

Y Galeri’s Jan Pennell added: “The beauty of this exhibition is that it enables new and emerging artists, many of them local, to showcase their work.

“We are very grateful for the crucial support of Caerphilly Town Council.”
