More snow leads to school closures

News | | Published: 14:12, Monday March 19th, 2018.

Pupil education has been disrupted by the weather again as 73 Caerphilly schools were closed on Monday March 19 following more snow.

Just as life was getting back to normal after the widespread disruption caused by Storm Emma and the Beast from the East, the mini Beast hit at the weekend leading to head teachers of 73 schools deciding the conditions were too dangerous to open.

Don’t forget to change your watch as British Summer Time starts this coming weekend with clocks going forward an hour on Sunday March 25.

It seens head teachers close schools at the drop of a hat these days.
Yes there are risks with snow and ice but when these pupils eventually gain employment they will learn that in many instances risk cannot be eliminated completely.
It is also strange how in some areas primary schools opened for more junior pupils but comprehensive schools for older pupils closed !

I’ve said it before, I can’t remember schools being closed in the snow unless the coal for heating had run out. In just about any other line of work failure to turn up for work results in less pay or working back the time. I wonder, if head teachers suffered a loss in salary every time they declared the school closed, whether they would be so keen to close?

It was the same in my day Richard – only time school was closed was if the boiler broke down or coal stock exhausted.
Good point about the loss of salary – I doubt they would be so keen to close schools if they had to suffer a salary loss.
