The Welsh Government has struck a deal with the UK Government over devolved powers affected by Brexit.
The EU (Withdrawal) Bill, as originally drafted, would have allowed the UK Government to take control of devolved policy areas, such as farming and fishing, once Britain left the European Union.
The amendments to the Bill include ‘sunset’ clauses that guarantee the ‘freezing’ of these powers will be temporary.
Any such regulations made by the UK Government on policy areas they temporarily hold would expire after five years, after which the Assembly and Welsh ministers would be free to legislate.
The Cabinet Secretary for Finance said: “This is a deal we can work with which has required compromise on both sides. Our aim throughout these talks has been to protect devolution and make sure laws and policy in areas which are currently devolved remain devolved and this we have achieved.”
Assembly Members had already passed a Bill which would have stopped devolved powers heading for London post-Brexit in the event that a deal could not be reached.
The Scottish Government however, is still at loggerheads with Westminster.
About time WG saw sense on something.
Also nice to see Labour failing in the local elections in England – maybe the electorate are at long last seeing through Jeremy Corbyn and his left wing supporters.
Interestingly I heard the Labour Council Leader in Derby was unseated by a UKIP candidate.
