An intensive care nurse has successfully fundraised to have two defibrillators placed in Caerphilly town.

Mother-of-two Fiona Davies teamed up with charity Welsh Hearts to have the lifesaving equipment installed at the Old Library Cafe in Morgan Jones Park and Abigail’s Nursery.

Each defibrillator, which is used to treat someone having a heart attack, costs £1,000 each. Mrs Davies managed to raise £1,000 and the remainder came from Barclays Bank which match-funded her contribution.

On a Just Giving page set up for the fundraising she said: “I really want to give something back to my community of mums that will potentially save a life if the unexpected happens in our area.”

In addition to the fundraising, Mrs Davies also carried out the training for staff at Abigail’s Nursery and the Old Library.

Angela Crabtree, owner of the Old Library, said: “I hope we never have to use it, but I am very, very, glad that we now have a defibrillator, and that one of our regular customers went out of their way to achieve it for us.”

Well done – a very worthy cause and such an act of community spirit.
