Police are warning people to be vigilant after £53,000 was stolen from a Newbridge man’s bank account.
The victim received a call from someone who claimed to be from Santander bank and asked him several security questions before telling him there had been an unauthorised transaction of £15,000 from his account.
The caller claimed this was because the victim had a virus on his home computer, which he offered to fix, a police spokesman said.
The man gained remote access to the victim’s computer to remove the virus and two withdrawals amounting to £53,000 were subsequently made.
The victim confirmed with Santander that the call was not legitimate, police said.
Officers are liaising with the victim to offer support and reassurance.
